“We are just never going to agree on this,” said Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) midway through an hours-long committee markup yesterday of the NASA Authorization Act of 2013.  Grayson’s comment reflected the deep-seated division between the Republican and Democratic members of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee about the approach that should be taken to funding NASA, and in a larger sense, all federal agencies in coming years.

The Obama Administration has requested $17,715.4 million for NASA in FY 2014, a decline of $54.6 million or 0.3 percent from the FY 2012 level.  Science funding would decline 1.1 percent under the proposed budget.

"A disappointment for me” was how Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) described what he predicted would be party line votes on a three year NASA reauthorization bill passed by the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.  Nelson’s prediction was correct as the committee’s Democrats all voted in favor of this bill that every Republican on the committee opposed.
