Steve Binkley, currently head of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Scientific Computing Research program, will become the department’s deputy director for science programs this November. Patricia Dehmer is stepping down from that role on Nov. 10 after a long and distinguished career at DOE.

Thomas Zurbuchen, a specialist in solar and heliospheric physics and a proponent of entrepreneurship, has been named the new head of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

In May, the National Science Board elected planetary geophysicist Maria Zuber as chair and computer scientist Diane Souvaine as vice chair. With France Córdova serving as National Science Foundation Director, top leadership positions at the foundation are now all occupied by women for the first time.

The Senate confirmed John King, Jr. as education secretary, promoting the former teacher and New York education commissioner from acting secretary to cabinet official. King will be responsible for implementation of the newly minted K-12 education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act.

The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing to consider six of President Obama’s nominees for leadership positions at the Department of Energy and Department of Interior, including Cherry Murray to be Director of the DOE Office of Science.
