State Department Seeking Public Comments on Visa Vetting Proposal

The State Department is seeking public input on its proposal to add new questions to the visa application process. The department is requesting specific feedback on how to minimize the reporting burden of applicants and if the proposed information to be collected is necessary. In response to a request for comment on a similar proposal last year, the presidents of the National Academies warned that expanding visa vetting procedures in this way “will have significant negative unintended consequences on the nation’s international leadership in research, innovation, and education,” could discourage researchers from coming into the U.S., and could lead scientific societies to hold meetings elsewhere.
