In a year when overall spending is being held steady, the Department of Energy and its science programs stand out as winners in the President’s fiscal year 2017 budget request, with discretionary funding increases of 4.2 percent for the Office of Science and 20.3 percent for the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy that grow even larger when the Administration’s proposals for mandatory funding are included.

The annual spending legislation for FY 2016 would increase spending at the Department of Energy Office of Science by 5.6 percent over FY 2015 levels and provide direction on matters including the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, next-generation supercomputing, climate modeling, and a slew of physical sciences facilities and projects.

President Obama signed into law the final 2016 defense policy authorization bill after vetoing an earlier version. The law includes a number of provisions supporting scientific research and collaboration at the Departments of Defense and Energy, including an easing of conference travel restrictions on federal scientists and engineers.

The Secretaries of Energy and Interior jointly announced the establishment of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, which will preserve and protect key sites that contributed to the research and development of the first nuclear bombs and also laid the groundwork for the national laboratory system and the Department of Energy itself
