The annual spending law for FY 2016 increases spending at NASA by 7.1 percent over FY 2015 levels and provides direction on matters including the James Webb Space Telescope, research aboard the International Space Station, and numerous scientific missions in development that will study the earth, sun, the rest of the solar system, and beyond.

Congress returned to Washington today from its summer recess with few legislative days left to enact a bill to provide federal funding for the new fiscal year that starts on October 1.  Congressional leaders continue to stress that there will not be a shutdown of the government, despite efforts by some in Congress to link passage of such a bill to the defunding of Planned Parenthood.

House appropriators have approved the FY 2016 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Bill.   Yesterday’s action by the full Appropriations Committee marks the first time in six years that this bill has been approved and sent to the House floor.
