Pickering, President of the Society, stands in the center of the first row; Pickering was Shapley's predecessor as Director of the Harvard College Observatory. Dr. Adrian van Maanen is the young man with the bow tie behind Pickering. Miss Annie J. Cannon is the second woman to the right of Pickering. Shapley appears at the extreme left.
