Description: 

L-R: Professor of Physics Charles P. Slichter and Graduate Student William C. Holton examine a glass Dewar vessel used to cool materials to within a few degrees of the absolute zero of temperature. The Dewar vessel, large electromagnet (background), and microwave equipment (foreground) are part of a sensitive apparatus used by Mr. Holton for his doctoral research. With it he can study magnetic atoms which are present in nonmagnetic materials in concentrations of one part in one hundred billion.
