January 26, 1913) career at Harvard where he was Higgins professor of astronomy (1960-73) and Chairman of the Astronomy Department and Director of the Harvard College Observatory (1966-71). A brief account is given of his decision to go to Kitt Peak, where he served as Director (1971-77).
