Online Resource: Bell Labs History

Bell Telephone Laboratories was established in 1925 as a consolidation of research and development work at Western Electric Company's research laboratory and engineering work at the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). On the early history, see Leonard S. Reich, The Making of American Industrial Research: Science and Business at GE and Bell, 1876-1926 (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1985).

Bell Telephone Laboratories was officially renamed AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1984. It was spun-off from AT&T as Lucent Technologies in 1996. In 2006 Lucent merged with Alcatel to become Alcatel-Lucent. Bell Laboratories produced an internal history, with a last edition of 1985 entitled A History of Science and Engineering in the Bell System.
