S. Department of Commerce; women in physics; National Bureau of Standards; trying to switch to the metric system; Dixie Lee Ray; Fred Dent; working at Argonne National Laboratories; becoming a vice president at General Motors; and Elmer W. Johnson.
(1927- ): Ph.D. physics, Tubingen University, Germany (1953); studied the instabilities in plasmas in solids which culminated in her observation of microwave emission from an electron-hole plasma (1967); written over seventy scientific papers and has patents in solid state physics, microwave electronics, and controlled thermonuclear fusion; first female Presidential appointee in the U. S. Department of Commerce as the Assistant Secretary for Science and Technology (1973); fourth woman elected to the National Academy of Engineering (1975); vice president of General Motors' Environmental Activity Staff (1979); retired from General Motors' in 1992.
