AAPT heats up College Park

Physics teachers enjoyed their largest meeting in recent history at the 2015 AAPT Summer Meeting, held July 25–29 on the University of Maryland’s main campus in College Park. Meeting highlights will soon be available through the AAPT website.

Because of the proximity of the conference to AIP headquarters, 22 AIP staff members were able to enjoy interactions with the AAPT community. AAPT history buffs were also invited to a special library tour and discussion of AIP resources for classrooms. Several staff gave presentations or led discussions on topics ranging from history, careers, and student outreach to teacher demographics and preparedness.

In the exhibit hall, AIP ran three booths—one for the Society of Physics Students, one for GradSchoolShopper, and the first-ever booth for the Statistical Research Center (SRC). Many AAPT members are already aware of the data and reports the SRC provides; these attendees were delighted to receive their own copy of the newest report, “Common Careers of Physicists in the Private Sector.” SPS assisted with the student poster sessions and hosted a reception and panel discussion in which local student members from University of Maryland spoke about developing and running a successful chapter.

Congratulations to AAPT for adding spark to summer for many physics teachers and enthusiasts, near and far.
