SPS is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2015 SPS Leadership Scholarships. The top award of $5,000, for Outstanding Leadership, went to Bradley Dice at William Jewel College. SPS awarded 18 other scholarships to accomplished members of the society. In addition, new this year were the Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) Underrepresented Student Scholarship, awarded to Kareem Wahid at the University of Texas-Pan American, the Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) Academic Scholarship, awarded to Helen Meskhidze at Elon University, and the SPS and AAPT Mary Beth Monroe Memorial Scholarship, awarded to Jonathan Van Schenck at Seattle Pacific University.

The following excerpt from a thank you letter written by one of the scholarship recipients reflects the level of involvement of those who apply for these awards, and the impact of SPS:

“I have found my SPS membership to be valuable as I pursue my physics-based career. I was the president of our chapter this past year and found it very rewarding to help foster camaraderie within our physics community. We attended conferences and hosted guest lecturers. We nurtured a mentoring program between the upperclassmen and newcomers. Being an active member of SPS has drastically altered my career trajectory for the better, and I have gained so much, from leadership skills to networking opportunities, not to mention what a gift it is to give back to my community.” –Claire Weaver, Hofstra University (graduating Dec. 2015)
