Almost all of the recipients of PhDs in physics who took a post-doc were employed primarily in physics one year after earning their degree, most in the same subfield as their dissertation. By contrast, over 40% of those who took a potentially permanent position were employed primarily in non-physics fields. In a recent focus on report, Physics Doctorates Initial Employment, the AIP Statistical Research Center examines the employment of physics PhD recipients one year after graduation. In addition to looking at the field of employment, the report also covers salaries earned by recipients in the various fields.
