SPS expands portfolio of scholarships

In 1985 the Society of Physics Students awarded its first SPS Leadership Scholarship to Susan Marie Tholen of the University of Kansas. In the 30 years since that time, more than 400 undergraduate students have received financial aid through this robust program, which now distributes roughly 20 scholarships each year. In 2015, SPS is pleased to announce the debut of three additional scholarships: the SSAI Underrepresented Student Scholarship, the SSAI Academic Scholarship, and the SPS and AAPT Mary Beth Monroe Memorial Scholarship.

The SSAI scholarships are funded by a new partnership with Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI), a woman-owned business based in Lanham, MD, which has been providing scientific and technological applications services since 1977. The company’s founders, Om and Saraswati (Sara) Bahethi, are naturalized US citizens who have shown both compassion and commitment in supporting and assisting students studying to earn degrees in atmospheric and related sciences.

The SPS and AAPT Mary Beth Monroe Memorial Scholarship was established by the SPS and the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) to recognize the outstanding academic and leadership accomplishments of physics majors who began their studies at a regionally accredited community college and who intend to pursue a career in physics education. This scholarship honors Mary Beth Monroe, who was a physics professor and SPS advisor at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, TX, for over 38 years. She was highly regarded by friends and colleagues for her inspiring lifelong commitment to the support and encouragement of physics students and her dedication to service at all levels in SPS and the AAPT.
