National Nuclear University Research Infrastructure Reinvestment Act of 2021
Purpose
To require the Secretary of Energy to revitalize existing university infrastructure relating to nuclear science and engineering and establish new university-based nuclear science and engineering facilities, and for other purposes.
Summary of Selected Provisions
- Updates policy for a Department of Energy program that funds efforts to strengthen university-based nuclear research and training reactor infrastructure, including through university-led consortia
- Directs DOE to carry out an Advanced Nuclear Research Infrastructure Enhancement Subprogram that funds advanced nuclear reactor concept demonstrations and creation of medical isotope production reactors, among other activities
- Requires that the subprogram fund the creation of new nuclear research facilities, including up to four new research reactors, with a recommended total budget of $600 million over eight years
- Instructs the subprogram support regional consortia that encourage the participation of minority-serving institutions, community colleges, and universities in EPSCoR states
