This essay addresses how Lou Lanzerotti and his colleagues in the physics research area of Bell Laboratories developed a portfolio of work in geophysics and space physics and the many ways they can affect communications systems. Lanzerotti joined Bell Labs as a postdoc in 1965 after receiving his PhD from Harvard University in experimental particle physics. He had graduated in 1960 from the University of Illinois in engineering physics.

When Lanzerotti joined the Bell Labs research group of Walter Brown, the data on energetic particles trapped in Earth’s magnetic field that were acquired by Brown’s instrument on the Telstar 1 satellite were still being analyzed. Other instruments were in preparation for space flight, including on the first satellite at geosynchronous orbit. Analyses of these satellite data, and especially in conjunction with ground-based geophysical data from academic research groups, opened wide-ranging ideas for leading research that could contribute to more quantitative understanding of Earth’s space environment and its effects on communication and other technologies on Earth and in space—a research field that is now called space weather.

The research pursued by Lanzerotti and his colleagues evolved over time, and as opportunities were made and developed, into designing, building, and installing instruments across various latitudes and longitudes on Earth and into the solar system. The comparisons with space environments at other planets were very enlightening in terms of producing deeper understanding of conditions at Earth. Lanzerotti retired from Bell Labs in 2002 and joined the New Jersey Institute of Technology. There he served as the PI for a NASA spacecraft instrument to measure in even more detail Earth’s particle radiation environment, completing a circle of his career.
