"Technology and Social Trends: Nine trends society leaders are facing in the early 21st Century"

Abstract: A main driver of change, both positive and negative in the modern scientific enterprise, is funding — research funding, educational funding, funding of publications, and sources of funding. This informative and provocative talk will provide the audience with an overview of many of the trends in the funding of science, academia, and academic and scientific publishing, as well as touching on the decision-making bodies — boards, leadership, and governance bodies — responsible, and possible ways to improve their capabilities.

Biography: Kent R. Anderson is the founder of Caldera Publishing Solutions. He is a past-President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing, the founder of the Scholarly Kitchen, and a member of the Journal Oversight Committee for the Journal of the American Medical Association. Over the past 20 years, he has been Publisher for Science and the Science family of journals at AAAS; CEO and Publisher for the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and its parent company, STRIATUS; an executive in the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Publishing Division; Publishing Director for the New England Journal of Medicine; and Director of Medical Journals at the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Over his career, he has worked as a writer, editor, designer, production manager, copy editor, managing editor, publisher, and CEO. He has shared in regional, national, and international awards as a writer, editor, publisher, designer, and blogger. He helped develop some of the first online continuing medical education (CME) sites, early e-only journal publishing programs, and rapid-publication approaches. Innovations include developing the first PowerPoint slide sets in an online journal, creating a popular and productive beta site for a major medical journal, leading the development of a video article series, podcasts, interactive quizzes, multimedia programs, handheld services, and email products.

In addition, he has launched many viable new titles both in print and online, managed major publication overhauls and redesigns, and helped to develop robust product portfolios. He writes and speaks occasionally on topics of interest to scholarly publishers and leaders. Kent has a graduate degree in business, and an undergraduate degree in English.
