The American Institute of Physics (AIP), a federation of physical science societies organized as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit membership corporation, is seeking a Chair of its Board of Directors. The Board Chair also serves as chair of the Board of Managers of its wholly-owned subsidiary, AIP Publishing LLC (AIPP). The Chair will have unique opportunities to lead the engaged AIP and AIPP boards in their shared missions of serving the physical sciences for the benefit of humanity.
The Board Chair will provide stewardship for establishing new AIP strategic priorities. The Board chair will anticipate and respond to the fast-changing global environments of physical sciences research, communications, education, and outreach. Roles and responsibilities include leadership for strategic planning, inspiring shared commitment to the mission, strategy and goals of AIP, guiding and presiding at board meetings, membership (ex-officio) on all standing committees of the Board, and representing the AIP and AIPP Boards to two respective CEOs.
The Board chair will be a strategic and visionary leader, have relevant senior executive level leadership and board-service experience, have a strong understanding of and commitment to AIP’s mission, and will work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. Desired education and expertise include international reputation in the physical sciences, administrative and governance skills, familiarity with science policy and scholarly publishing, non-profit management skills, financial acumen, and excellent communication and diplomacy skills.
The AIP Executive Office has appropriate resources available to assist in carrying out the duties of the Chair. The Chair of the Board of Directors is not a paid employee of the Corporation. However, a modest stipend is given for service in this part-time position.
