Opening Doors for Others: How John Hargy Turned SPS Opportunities into Impact
SPS Google Scholar, John Hargy
From a small physics department in Tennessee to MIT, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, John Hargy’s journey demonstrates what can happen when talented students are given the opportunity to thrive.
Through programs supported by AIP’s Society of Physics Students (SPS) and the generosity of AIP donors, John gained access to conferences, leadership experiences, scholarships, and professional networks that helped shape his future. He then used those same opportunities to help open doors for countless other students.
His story is not just of personal success. It’s a story of impact multiplied.
Creating a Culture of Possibility Through SPS
At Southern Adventist University, John found more than a student organization in SPS. He found a platform to create opportunities for himself and his peers.
Recognizing that many students were unaware of the research experiences, internships, and graduate school pathways available to them, John used his SPS chapter to organize a three-part seminar series that introduced students to summer research opportunities, explained the application process, and connected them with peers who had successfully navigated those experiences.
As a result, students began applying for internships and research programs they might never have considered before, and many were accepted.
“We really created a culture,” John says. “Students started going out and seeking those opportunities.”
Through SPS, John helped create a culture of possibility. Students gained access to information, mentorship, and professional networks that empowered them to pursue ambitious goals and imagine futures they had never considered.
When One Opportunity Opens Many Doors
For John, one SPS opportunity became the catalyst for everything that followed.
An SPS Google Scholarship enabled him to attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists, where he connected with researchers and graduate programs from across the country.
“The conference opened doors,” John says.
The relationships John built at the conference led to a summer internship at MIT, where he gained invaluable research experience, mentorship, and confidence working alongside world-class scientists.
Before that experience, applying to MIT had never felt within reach.
“Applying to a school like MIT is not something that would have crossed my mind before,” he says.
The internship changed that.
“It gave me the confidence to shoot my shot,” John says.
That shot paid off. John was accepted into MIT’s PhD program and later earned both a prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and a Fulbright Fellowship.
Looking back, John can trace that extraordinary path to a single SPS scholarship that connected him to new opportunities and changed the trajectory of his career.
Paying It Forward
Yet when asked about his accomplishments, John quickly shifts the focus away from himself.
“I feel like anyone in our department could have done the same thing,” he says.
That’s why he plans to continue mentoring students long after he leaves campus. He has already encouraged faculty members to invite him back to speak with future students about research opportunities, graduate school, and navigating the application process.
John believes talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not always equally accessible. By sharing what he has learned, he hopes to help more students from backgrounds like his own discover pathways they may not realize are within reach.
“I really want to help students from backgrounds like mine,” he says.
Investing in Future Scientists
John’s story illustrates the power of donor support in action.
A travel grant becomes a first conference. A scholarship becomes a life-changing connection. A leadership opportunity becomes a stronger community. And one student’s success becomes inspiration for dozens more.
“Without a doubt,” John says, “the opportunities I was given through these organizations enabled me to be competitive for graduate school and make a difference for a lot of students here as well.”
As John prepares for the next chapter of his journey, his impact is already being felt by the students he mentored, the opportunities he helped create, and the culture of possibility he built through SPS.
