AIP’s Science Policy Information Services

AIP’s Office of Government and Institutional Relations provides the below services to assist the physics and astronomy community in following science policy developments. Please call whenever we can be of assistance!

INFORMATION PRODUCTS:

FYI: If you would like to receive FYI, our weekly e-mail policy summaries, please write to NEWFYI@AIP.ORG There is no charge for FYI. FYI is posted on AIP’s Physics Information Network, PINET, as well as other electronic services. Call for further information. An FYI archive can be accessed on Internet (via anonymous FTP) in the following directory (on ftp.hep.net): anon_ftp/aip-fyi/199x. File names are of the form: aipfyi-nnn-mmmdd199x.txt where nnn is issue number, mmm is month, and dd is date of issue. FYI is not copyrighted. We encourage its use in other formats; please credit AIP.

“Communicating With Congress": This brochure provides guidelines on writing to, or visiting with, Members of Congress. Single copies are provided without charge: send a self-addressed, business-sized stamped (29 cents) envelope to: AIP Office of Government and Institutional Relations; One Physics Ellipse, College Park, MD 20740-3843. A workshop kit is also available; please call for details.

INFORMATION SERVICES:

Our office has access to an electronic legislative data service, and files are maintained on a variety of science policy issues. Call us for help with:

Members of Congress: Voting records and biographies, office addresses and telephone numbers, and names of science policy legislative assistants and appointment secretaries.

Science Policy Committees: Committee rosters, names of key staff members, jurisdiction, addresses and telephone numbers.

Scheduling Information: Hearing schedules and the congressional calendar.

Congressional Documents, Reports, Bills: A library is maintained of major science policy documents. Contact our office if you need a copy of a section of one of these documents, or ordering information.

Legislation: Provisions, cosponsors, status, and selected hearing testimony.

General Information: Call if you need assistance about the difference between an authorization bill and an appropriations bill, the name of President Clinton’s science adviser, how Senator Mikulski spells her name, who your Members of Congress are, or a map of Capitol Hill.

These services are provided without charge by the American Institute of Physics. We welcome any suggestions on how to assist you.
