AIP’s Science Policy Information Services and Products

JAN 07, 1998

The American Institute of Physics’ Office of Government and Institutional Relations offers a number of services designed to assist the physics community in understanding, and communicating with, Congress. Most are available without charge. Our science policy site on the AIP Home Page has been upgraded to provide quick and easy access to most of these products and services.

FYI, THE AIP BULLETIN OF SCIENCE POLICY NEWS:

FYI offers electronic coverage and in-depth analysis of budget and policy developments significant to the physics community. Coverage focuses on congressional deliberations affecting federal R&D, primarily within the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, NASA, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Department of Defense. FYI is distributed electronically several times weekly; subscriptions are free.

Current and back issues of FYI are available on AIP’s Home Page at http://www.aip.org/enews/fyi/ . Searchable archives are provided for issues after 1994.

To become an FYI email subscriber, send an email message to AIP’s automated Listserver at: “listserv@aip.org ”. Do not fill in the subject line. To have FYI sent to the address in your message header, type: “add fyi”. To have FYI sent to a different email address, type: “add different address’ fyi”. Two important notes: send your request to “listserv@aip.org ” and NOT to our correspondence address (fyi@aip.org ). Also, the quotation marks used above should not appear in your message.

To remove your email address from our subscription list, follow the above steps, substituting “delete fyi” in the message field. The Listserver will only honor this request if it originates from the address you want deleted; in other instances, please contact us at “fyi@aip.org ” for help.

SCIENCE POLICY HOME PAGE:

The Office of Government and Institutional Relations provides this redesigned site on AIP’s Home Page to answer many of your questions about physics-related policy matters. This site categorizes FYI issues by funding agencies, stages in congressional deliberations, and outcomes. It also provides information on congressional committee rosters and jurisdictions, tips on writing to and meeting with Members of Congress, and links to other useful sites. Issues of FYI and most of the other products and services described here can be accessed through the Science Policy Page at http://www.aip.org/gov

“COMMUNICATING WITH CONGRESS” BROCHURE:

AIP has a six-panel brochure with guidance on writing to, and visiting with, Members of Congress. Single copies are available without charge. Send your request, with a self-addressed, stamped business-sized envelope, to AIP’s Office of Government and Institutional Relations at the address below, or find similar tips on the Science Policy site at http://www.aip.org/gov/commcong.html . A workshop kit is available by calling 301-209-3095 .

PHYSICS SUCCESS STORIES:

AIP has developed 12 double-sided handouts illustrating the importance of basic and applied physics R&D. They are useful as exhibits or background information when meeting with, or writing to, Members of Congress. Physics Success Stories highlight technologies employing federally-funded physics research, facts on economic impact and funding sources, an R&D timeline, and other important information. Topics include: medical imaging, lasers, global positioning system, environment, new materials, telecommunications, computers, consumer goods, national defense, transportation, energy efficiency, and medical physics.

Physics Success Stories are available without charge in small quantities, and at cost for bulk orders. To receive copies of any of these exhibits, send us your US mailing address and the topics desired. These exhibits can be viewed on the AIP Home Page at http://www.aip.org/success/
