President Bush’s FY 2002 S&T Program Budget Requests

President Bush sent his FY 2002 budget request to Congress yesterday. During the next two weeks, FYI will provide detailed information on physics-related programs. Below are the percentage changes in total funding for selected programs between this year and the President’s FY 2002 request. Please note that program content can change between years. No adjustment has been made for inflation, which is likely to be similar to the Consumer Price Index for 2000, which was 3.4%.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION

Total is up 1.3%
Research and Related Activities is down 0.5%
Physics is down 2.1%
Materials Research is down 2.1%
Astronomical Sciences is up 5.1%
Atmospheric Sciences is down 1.0%
Earth Sciences is up 0.8%
Ocean Sciences is down 1.0%
Total Engineering is unchanged
U.S. Polar Research Programs is up 1.5%
Total Education and Human Resources is up 10.9%
Total Major Research Equipment is down 20.6%

DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY (As amended)

Total Science is up 0.1%
High Energy Physics is up 0.6%
Nuclear Physics is unchanged
Biological and Environmental Research is down 8.2%
Basic Energy Sciences is up 1.3%
Fusion Energy Sciences is unchanged

Total is up 1.8%
Space Science is up 5.7%
Earth Science is down 13.9%
Biological and Physical Research is down 6.9%
Human Space Flight is up 2.5%

No separate request; Eisenhower has been consolidated into a broader Teacher Quality program which is up 17.0%
