FY 2012 Appropriations for Department of Education STEM Programs

Congress and the President have agreed on a final FY 2012 appropriations bill. H.R. 2055 combines nine funding bills, and is accompanied by House Report 112-331 . This 1,385 page report contains the bill language and a second section with the appropriators’ recommendations. See page 1147 for the recommendations for the Department of Education.

The Administration proposed several new programs that would benefit science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teaching:

Mathematics and Science Partnership

The Administration’s proposal to replace the Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP) with a new program, “Effective Teaching and Learning for a Complete Education: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program” (for which $206.1 million was requested) was rejected.

The FY 2011 appropriation for MSP was $175.1 million
The FY 2012 appropriation for MSP is $150.0 million, a decline of $25.1 million or 14.3 percent

Investing in Innovation Fund:

The FY 2012 Administration request was $300.0 million
The FY 2012 appropriation is $149.7 million

Teacher and Leader Pathways:

The FY 2012 Administration request was $250.0 million
The FY 2012 appropriation is zero

Advanced Research Projects Agency – Education

The FY 2012 Administration was $90.0 million
The FY 2012 appropriation is zero
