Energy and Natural Resources Act of 2017
Purpose
A bill to provide for the modernization of the energy and natural resources policies of the United States, and for other purposes.
Summary of Selected Provisions
- Many provisions derive from the “North American Energy Security and Infrastructure Act of 2016,” a major energy policy bill that came close to passing during the 114th Congress
- Research-related provisions are similar to those in the House’s “Department of Energy Research and Innovation Act”
- Authorizes a coordinated interagency program to conduct R&D at the “energy–water nexus”
- Authorizes a gradual increase in funding for the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy
- Authorizes funding levels for the DOE Office of Science that rise to over $7 billion by 2022
- Establishes in statute the position of the under secretary for science and energy and assigns it an inter-office coordinating function
