STEM Opportunities Act of 2017
Purpose
To direct the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy to carry out programs and activities to ensure that Federal science agencies and institutions of higher education receiving Federal research and development funding are fully engaging their entire talent pool, and for other purposes.
Summary of Selected Provisions
- Directs research-funding agencies to make allowances for caregiver needs in managing grant awards
- Directs research-funding agencies to collect and maintain demographic data on federal grant awardees, to be compiled by the National Science Foundation
- Directs NSF to compile demographic data on STEM faculty in institutions of higher education
- Directs NSF and federal labs to identify best practices and to implement policies to expand STEM workforce participation
- Directs NSF to award grants to support reform projects to increase diversity in STEM career tracks
