Summary of Selected Provisions
Volcano Monitoring
- Directs the U.S. Geological Survey to establish a “National Volcano Early Warning and Monitoring System” whose purpose is to “organize, modernize, standardize, and stabilize” the work of the nation’s existing volcano observatories
- Requires modernization activities include “the comprehensive application of emerging technologies, including digital broadband seismometers, real-time continuous Global Positioning System receivers, satellite and airborne radar interferometry, acoustic pressure sensors, and spectrometry to measure gas emissions”
- Recommends USGS receive $55 million per year over five years to carry out the directed activities
Geologic Mapping
- Reauthorizes USGS’ national cooperative geologic mapping program through 2023
Wildfire Technology Modernization
- Directs the Departments of Agriculture and Interior, in consultation with NASA and the Departments of Energy and Commerce, to “establish and maintain a system to predict the locations of future wildfires for fire-prone areas of the U.S.” that enhances existing systems
