Powerful Brain Imaging Tool

(Inside Science) -- An important step in planning tumor surgery includes assessing the tumor stiffness. Most brain tumors cannot be examined noninvasively, so researchers are using magnetic resonance elastography to measure stiffness of tumor tissue inside the brain. In studies, the MRE imaging technique reliably identified tumors that were soft enough for removal with a minimally invasive suction technique, versus harder or stiffer tumors requiring more invasive surgery.
