Though you don’t often see them, sewage pumps play critical roles, from urban construction to environmental protection. These mechanical devices pump and treat wastewater, typically using an impeller with a semi-open design to reduce clogging. This design, however, creates unsteady flows that reduce efficiency. With the aim of improving efficiency, Yang et al. tested new pump impeller blade-tip designs.

“Understanding the internal flow dynamics is crucial for optimizing pump design and enhancing overall performance,” said author Ling Zhou. “This is essential for efficient wastewater treatment systems, particularly in the context of increasing urbanization and environmental concerns worldwide.”

The researchers designed four different impeller blade-tips to understand which could improve sewage pump efficiency while keeping blockages low. Numerical calculations combined with experimental tests allowed the researchers to study the tips’ effect on the development of leakage vortex systems as well as the system’s energy characteristics and internal flow dynamics.

The results revealed differences in the tip size had an outsized impact on the pump performance. The results also showed the different tips changed the differential mixing effect of leakage flow, which impacted the overall system efficiency. A T-shaped tip in particular showed improved hydraulic efficiency and energy stabilization. The findings can help engineers tailor tip designs to specific pump projects.

“We envision our findings to be applied in the optimized design of semi-open impeller sewage pumps, contributing to advancements in wastewater treatment technology,” Zhou said. “Implementing these insights could lead to more reliable and efficient sewage pump systems, ultimately supporting sustainable urban development and environmental protection efforts.”
