Of those studying physics or astronomy, 31% were TAs, 14% were RA’s, 19% were supported by fellowships or scholarships, 36% were self-funded. Of those studying engineering, 11% were TAs, 18% were RAs, 21% were supported by fellowships or scholarships, 50% were self-funded. Of those studying other fields, 19% were TAs, 8% were RAs, 25% were supported by fellowships or scholarships, and 48% were self-funded. Self-funded includes family assistance, loans, and wages. Other fields does not include profession degree fields such as law and medicine.

  • Figure 8: Desired Future Employment Sectors for New Physics Bachelors. For employed bachelors, 52% hoped to work in the private sector. For those enrolled in graduate school, 39% hoped to work at a college or university and 34% hoped to work in the private sector. Overall, 43% hoped to work in the private sector and 30% hoped to work at a college or university. Overall also includes responses from individuals who were unemployed. Respondents were asked in which employment sector they hoped to be working ten years in the future.

Of those graduating from bachelor’s-granting departments, 23% were in graduate school for physics or astronomy, 21% in graduate school for another subject. 56% were employed or seeking. From master’s-granting departments, 34% were in graduate school for physics or astronomy, 17% in graduate school for another subject, 49% employed or seeking. From PhD-granting departments, 35% in graduate school for physics or astronomy, 16% in graduate school for another subject, 49% employed or seeking.
