NASA Budget Request for FY 1994: Research and Development

The fiscal year 1994 NASA budget request is $15,265.0 million, an increase of 6.5% over the current fiscal year (see FYI #55.) A major component of the NASA budget is Research & Development, under which are the following programs of interest to the physics and astronomy community:

OFFICE OF SPACE SCIENCE:

PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY funding would decrease from the 1993 Current Estimate (1993/CE) or budget of $1,103.9 million to $1,074.7 million. Under this category are the following selected programs:

Advanced X-Ray Astrophysics Facility Development funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $168.3 million to $260.3 million.

Gravity Probe-B Development funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $1.9 million to $40.0 million.

Global Geospace Science funding would decrease from the 1993/CE of $72.6 million to $13.3 million.

Explorer Development funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $115.8 million to $123.3 million.

Mission Operations and Data Analysis funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $415.4 million to $416.2 million.

Research and Analysis funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $71.6 million to $72.2 million.

PLANETARY EXPLORATION funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $473.6 million to $557.2 million. Under this category are the following selected programs:

Mars ’94 funding, for which money has not been previously requested, totals $3.5 million.

Cassini Development funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $205.0 million to $266.6 million.

Mission Operations and Data Analysis funding would decrease from the 1993/CE of $163.5 million to $160.7 million.

Research and Analysis funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $101.7 million to $126.4 million.

OFFICE OF LIFE & MICROGRAVITY SCIENCES & APPLICATIONS:

LIFE SCIENCES funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $140.5 million to $143.9 million. Under this category are the following selected programs:

Research and Analysis funding would decrease from $53.9 million to $49.2 million.

Flight Experiments funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $81.1 million to $94.7 million.

MICROGRAVITY SCIENCE RESEARCH funding for fiscal year 1994 includes $18.4 million for Research and Analysis, $71.0 million for Flight Experiments, and $117.7 million for Shuttle/Spacelab Payload, Mission Management and Integration.

OFFICE OF MISSION TO PLANET EARTH:

MISSION TO PLANET EARTH funding for fiscal year 1994 would increase from the 1993/CE of $937.9 million to $1,074.9 million. Under this category are the following selected programs:

Earth Observing System funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $263.8 million to $322.7 million.

Earth Observing System Data Information System funding would increase from the 1993/CE of $130.6 million to $182.7 million.

Earth Probes funding would decrease from the 1993/CE of $99.4 million to $97.3 million.

Mission Operations and Data Analysis would increase from the 1993/CE of $147.5 million to $160.8 million.

Modeling and Data Analysis would increase from the 1993/CE of $42.6 million to $45.0 million.
