Key Senators Who Will Not be Returning

NOV 06, 1996

When the 105th Congress convenes on January 7, three key senators who have played significant roles in the formulation of science policy and funding will not be returning. Two are retiring; one lost his re-election bid. Here is what we now know:

APPROPRIATIONS

Energy and Water Development:

Retiring - Ranking Member J. Bennett Johnston (D-LA), Mark Hatfield (R-OR)

Defeated - (None)

VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies:

Retiring - J. Bennett Johnston (D-LA)

Defeated - (None)

Commerce, Justice, State and the Judiciary:

Retiring - Mark Hatfield (R-OR)

Defeated - (None)

AUTHORIZATION

Subcommittee on Science, Technology and Space:

Retiring - (none)

Defeated - Larry Pressler (R-SD, chairman of full committee)

These committees will be reorganized this month. While most senators will retain their current committee memberships in the new 105th Congress, some changes will be made. Senate Republicans will retain control of committee leadership.
