Senate Appropriations Committee Passes Defense Funding Bill
On June 4, the Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously passed S. 2132, the Defense Appropriations bill for FY 1999. Details are provided below of the Senate committee’s recommendations for the funding categories 6.1 (Basic Research), 6.2 (Applied Research), and 6.3 (Advanced Technology Development.) For Basic Research, the committee would provide funding equal to the Administration’s request for the Navy and the Air Force, less than the request for the Army, and more than the request for Defense-wide programs (including DARPA and the Ballistic Missile Defense Office.) Applied Research within the services would receive more than the request, and Defense-wide Applied Research would receive the requested amount. In all cases, Advanced Technology Development would be funded at levels greater than the request.
