NSF Releases Final Spending Plan for FY 2013

The National Science Foundation has released its spending plan for the current year. Importantly, this “FY 2013 Current Plan ” includes mandatory reductions made due to sequestration.

Shown below are selected figures for FY 2012, the FY 2013 final budget, and the Obama Administration’s request for FY 2014:

Total National Science Foundation:

FY 2012 Budget: $7,105.4 million
FY 2013 Budget: $6,884.1 million, a decline of $221.3 million or 3.1 percent

FY 2014 Request: $7,625.8 million, an increase of $741.7 million or 10.8 percent over the current FY 2013 budget

Within NSF are the following selected accounts:

Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences:

FY 2012 Budget: $1,308.7 million
FY 2013 Budget: $1,249.5 million, a decline of $59.2 million or 4.5 percent

FY 2014 Request: $1,386.1 million, an increase of $136.6 million or 10.9 percent over the current FY 2013 budget

Within Mathematical and Physical Sciences are the following divisions:

Astronomical Sciences:

FY 2012 Budget: $234.7 million
FY 2013 Budget: $232.5 million, a decline of $2.2 million or 0.9 percent

FY 2014 Request: $243.6 million, an increase of $11.1 million or 4.8 percent over the current FY 2013 budget

Materials Research:

FY 2012 Budget: $294.4 million
FY 2013 Budget: $290.7 million, a decline of $3.7 million or 1.3 percent

FY 2014 Request: $314.6 million, an increase of $23.9 million or 8.2 percent over the current FY 2013 budget

Physics:

FY 2012 Budget: $277.4 million
FY 2013 Budget: $250.7 million, a decline of $26.7 million or 9.6 percent

FY 2014 Request: $289.0 million, an increase of $38.3 million or 15.3 percent over the current FY 2013 budget

Directorate for Geosciences:

FY 2012 Budget: $1,321.4 million
FY 2013 Budget: $1,265.8 million, a decline of $55.6 million or 4.2 percent

FY 2014 Request: $1,393.9 million, an increase of $128.1 million or 10.1 percent over the current FY 2013 budget

Directorate for Engineering:

FY 2012 Budget: $824.6 million
FY 2013 Budget: $813.5 million, a decline of $11.1 million or 1.3 percent

FY 2014 Request: $911.1 million, an increase of $97.6 million or 12.0 percent over the current FY 2013 budget

FY 2013 Budget: $833.3 million, an increase of $2.8 million or 0.3 percent

FY 2013 Budget: $196.2 million, a decline of $1.9 million or 1.0 percent
