Creating Monster Winds to Boost Hurricane Safety

Inside Science Buzzwords:

  1. Hurricane - A rotating weather system that forms and intensifies over tropical oceans and produces storms with winds stronger than 74 mph. The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June 1st to November 30th.
  2. Saffir-Simpson Scale - A scale used to classify hurricanes based on the storm’s maximum sustained wind speed. A Category 1 hurricane has sustained winds of at least 74mph and a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 156pmh.
  3. Structural testing - Testing used to identify weaknesses in home materials and components such as windows, shingles and siding, especially when exposed to conditions such as those in a hurricane.
