1. Adaptive optics - a technique used to sharpen blurry images by correcting distortions from incoming light waves, often through the use of highly adjustable mirrors; the technique has been applied to sharpen images obtained by ground telescopes, to adjust for atmospheric distortions in incoming starlight, and more recently to correct for the imperfections introduced by the lens and cornea while obtaining images of the eye’s retina.

2. Retina - the back wall of the eye, made up of light-sensitive cone cells that convert light into electrical signals.

3. Macula - located near the center of the retina, a yellowish oval that is critical for central vision and visual acuity and contains large amounts of cone cells responsible for color vision.
