Inside Science Buzzwords:

  1. Physics – The study of matter and energy, space and time; within these broad areas many areas are studied such as the properties of different states of matter, including solids, liquids, gases, and liquid crystals.
  2. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) - an electronic visual display used in most flat panel monitors and laptops; LCDs employ liquid crystals, which are made of molecules, usually controlled by electricity, that can be rapidly rearranged to either block light or allow it to pass through, enabling them to change the output of each pixel in the display.
  3. Pupil – A hole in the center of the eye, surrounded by the iris, or colored part, of the eye. The pupil allows light to enter the retina, the light sensitive part of the eye that sends visual signals to the brain. In humans, the pupil is circle-shaped; in other animals, it can have a slit-like or oval shape.
  4. Pixel - A single point in a digital image or the smallest piece of a picture on a screen that can be controlled.
  5. Prototype - In research and development, an early-stage model that can be a device, sample, software or other innovation that is used to test an idea or demonstrate a concept. It can be anything from a close representation of the final product or a very primitive one.
