Degrees Earned in the Physical Sciences and Engineering Fields

JAN 25, 2024

(Last Updated: March 2026)

We compiled degree data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to provide insights into the number of degrees earned in physical science and selected engineering fields.

In this visualization, we present data from the 2011 to 2024 survey years. We will continue to update this tool as additional NCES datasets become available. (The data from 2024 are provisional .)

Available Data Views:

  1. Number of Degrees Earned
  2. Representation of Degrees Earned (%) – The percentage of degrees in selected fields earned by members of the selected categories.
  3. Number of Degrees Earned Per 1,000 (Overall) – The number of degrees in selected fields earned by members of the selected categories for every 1,000 degrees earned overall.
  4. Number of Degrees Earned Per 1,000 (Same Race or Ethnicity) – The number of degrees in selected fields earned by members of the selected categories for every 1,000 degrees earned overall by those in the same race or ethnicity category.

We recommend limiting the number of selected variables to ensure the graphic is easily readable. Labels will not appear if there is insufficient space to display them. If that happens, try deleting some of the selected variables.
