House Votes to Approve Space Station Funding by Huge Margin

JUN 30, 1994

Last night, the House of Representatives defeated by a vote of 278 to 155 an amendment to terminate space station funding. This action occurred during consideration of H.R. 4624, the VA, HUD, Independent Agencies Appropriations Bill for FY 1995.

This victory for the space station came as a result of an intensive effort by the White House and NASA. Their efforts can be seen in the margin of victory: last year’s termination amendment lost by 24 votes, while this year’s margin was 123 votes. Key factors in this win include the station’s redesign, cost-cutting, and the new cooperative agreement with Russia. H.R. 4624, which was passed by the House last night, now moves to the Senate.

The following is the roll call vote on the Roemer amendment to terminate the space station and reallocate the money to other NASA accounts. Due to space limitations, only Members voting FOR the Roemer amendment are listed, as well as those not voting. Members not listed voted AGAINST the amendment.
