Roster of Physics Departments with Enrollment and Degree Data, 2021

The Physics Roster is a listing of all degree-granting physics departments in the US. It includes enrollment data for the fall of 2021 and the degrees conferred during the 2020-21 academic year. These data come from AIP’s annual departmental survey of Enrollments and Degrees.

The 9,031 physics bachelors awarded in the class of 2021 represents the first time in over two decades that the number of physics bachelors conferred at US physics departments has declined. The class of 2021 represents a 3% decline from the degree class of 2020.

The 1,810 physics PhDs conferred in the class of 2021 is relatively unchanged from the previous year declining 1% from the class 2020. Non-US citizens comprise 50% of the PhDs conferred in the class of 2021.
