NSF FY 1995 Budget Request: Education and Human Resources

The National Science Foundation has requested a 2.9 percent increase for the Education and Human Resources Directorate for fiscal year 1995. This increase of $16.40 million would bring funding up to $569.60 million.

The Education and Human Resources budget is separate from the Research and Related Activities Directorate and the Geosciences Directorate. It is divided into the following six components:

Systemic Reform. FY 1993 (last year) funding: $82.29 million; FY 1994 Current Plan: $109.98 million; FY 1995 Request: Up 7.3% to $117.98 million.

Elementary, Secondary and Informal Education. FY 1993 funding: $184.68 million; FY 1994 Current Plan: $198.28 million; FY 1995 Request: Up 0.5% to $199.28 million.

Undergraduate Education: FY 1993: $61.91 million; FY 1994 Current Plan: $81.01 million; FY 1995 Request: Up 2.5% to $83.01 million.

Graduate Education and Research Development. FY 1993: $85.41 million; FY 1994 Current Plan: $66.46 million; FY 1995 Request: Up 6.9% to $71.06 million.

Human Resource Development. FY 1993: $49.61 million; FY 1994 Current Plan: $66.39 million; FY 1995 Request: Constant at $66.39 million.

Research, Evaluation and Dissemination: FY 1993: $41.16 million; FY 1994 Current Plan: $47.48 million; FY 1995 Request: Up 0.80% to $48.28 million.

In the budget document provided to Congress, NSF provides the following information on support by education level in the FY 1995 request:

Kindergarten to 12th grade: An increase of $8.87 million (2.5%) over current funding to $360.05 million. Focused on Systemic Reform and Elementary, Secondary and Informal Science Activities.

Undergraduate: An increase of $2.44 million (2.4%) over current funding to $102.25 million. Focused on Undergraduate Education and Human Resource Development Activities.

Graduate: An increase of $4.60 million (7.8%) over current funding to $63.39 million. Focused on Graduate Education and Research Development Activity.

Public Understanding of Science. Declines from $6.03 million to $5.97 million (-1.0%). “Support comes from both the Elementary, Secondary, and Informal Science and the Research, Evaluation and Dissemination Activities.”
